Thirrouluru

Thirrouluru

Living in little old, coastal green Thirroul we often forget that there's a big red country out there waiting to be explored. More than that it's highly achievable to just drive away from home and see the wonders of our country from a lowly Tarago. Thirroul neighbours Aaron Hughes and Kiara Mucci decided to do just that, joined by the FIFO-ing Dave Fox, and aided by the ancient image-capturing devices of paint, Super 8 and 35mm.

Come eat some cheese, drink wine (or a tinnie), marvel at the power of the Tarago and look at the photos, drawings and film they took in the desert.

Opening Friday November 4, 7pm and running through Thursday, November 10.

Fracture Zone by Chris Frape

Fracture Zone by Chris Frape

On June 4th 2015 Chris Frape was bodyboarding on the South Coast when his leg got lodged in a rock and fractured into 12 pieces. He lost his mobility, ability to work or surf and a whole lot more in one moment.

Over the next 12 months Chris worked through physical and mental challenges to finally get back on his feet. He was able to return to his work in photography, capturing new moments throughout the South Coast. These images have documented the thriving creative community that exists just an hour out of Sydney, as well as the landscape and ocean that Chris drew peace and strength from during his recuperation.

On the 3rd of June 2016, a year after the accident, Chris will return to hospital to have (hopefully his last for a while) an operation. This will improve his mobility and let him conquer some more challenges.

Before he goes to hospital Chris wanted to have an exhibition of images he took over the last year. Photos that show not only a glimpse of life on the South Coast, but also the events, people and natural beauty that inspired him through the hardest 12 months of his life.

Please join him for the opening on Friday May 13, 6-9pm to reflect on all the moments, good and bad, and to celebrate those to come.

Prints will be available for sale, and all proceeds will go towards Chris' medical expenses....yep there's a few

This exhibition is made possible thanks to the good people at:

Holiday by Stephanie Day

Stephanie Day is a contemporary artist working in the field of photography and film and we're looking forward to her new exhibition "Holiday" coming to the Leisure Coast. Launching her fifth artist book, Stephanie’s work brings absurdity and relief from where you’d rather be.

A year in the making, hailing from Indonesia to the Escarpment, this exhibition is both intensly intimate and uncomfortably annonymous. So take this one way ticket to tropical voyeurism and enjoy your life...

Opening Thursday, April 7 from 6pm.

Terrible Truths / Solid Effort

Spunk and Black Gold present:

With new records in tow, Terrible Truths and Solid Effort are stopping by one of our favourite record stores, Franks Wild Years in Thirroul, on Saturday, January 16 for a free in-store.

Hailing from the depths of rural and often stifling outer suburban living in various pockets of Adelaide and South Australia, Terrible Truths turned their local music scene on its head from the get-go, challenging conventions and finding themsevles at the fore of a creative musical reneaisannce.

Limited recordings have trickled out over the years, from a long out-of-print EP released via SA label Small Town City Living, through to a split release with Melbourne’s similarly-minded Hissey Miyake and a hit single through eminent NYC label Mexican Summer. The band turned up the heat on their creative output with a debut LP. Their music is beholden to a range of late-70’s and early 80’s post-punk and disco sounds, with a healthy mix of 90’s riot grrrl flavour.

Hailing from the Coal Coast, Sydney-based Solid Effort have crafted a unique brand of leisure-punk. Their sound is a cross between The Go Betweens, Minutemen, Transformer-era Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, though heavily influenced by the emergence of the local scene headed up by acts like Shining Bird and The Pinheads.

Stacks by Angie Cass

Port Kembla's blazing chimneys, factory roofs, and high seas are the inspiration for this exhibition by local artist Angie Cass.

The raw materials - the wallpaper in the collages, and the metal parts and tins, are from the garages of Angie's Dad, Barry Deacon, a children's welfare officer in the UK, and her father-in-law, Kevin Cass, who raced motorbikes professionally in his younger years. This show is a tribute to them both.

"Stacks" opens Thursday, October 29 from 6-7:30pm with drinks and nibbles and runs through till Wednesday, November 11.

Prices for original collages start at $90.
