Shining Bird: Rivermouth

The Bird is back! Ahead of their appearance at BIGSOUND next week, Shining Bird have unveiled new single Rivermouth. The stunning track premiered on RRR and FBi Radio, followed by an online premiere via FasterLouder.

For those who may not have picked up on the local hype yet, Shining Bird are an experimental pop band from Austinmer. Originally formed as a studio project in 2012, they released the Shade of the Sea EP, followed by their debut album Leisure Coast on Spunk Records in 2013. The album received widespread acclaim for its unique brand of Australiana-infused dream pop, and lead single Distant Dreaming now has over 300,000 views on YouTube. On the back of strong reviews from publications such as Rolling Stone, Russh and the Sydney Morning Herald, the release helped propel Shining Bird towards a new bunch of listeners.

After much anticipation by fans, the band now returns with Rivermouth, a track steeped in Australian bush and coastal imagery that reflects a maturity of songwriting and production. The track is filled with layers of detail that offer a different journey on every listen. Band member and producer Russell Webster says, "I'm sure Rivermouth could be symbolic of many issues, both personal and as a human race, but what I started to realise was how it also reflected the nature of the creative process itself. Leonard Cohen reckons 'If you stick with a song long enough it will yield, even if it takes a decade to write.' I'm glad we stuck with this one."

Once again the artwork comes courtesy of Paul Ryan, who painted the cover of Leisure Coast, as well as two album covers for Spunk label-mate Bill Callahan. This time around Paul has painted a work in the same style as his recent Archibald Prize nominated entry.

Rivermouth is available now on iTunes and your preferred streaming service. It will also be released physically as a 7" in November, backed with another new single.
